Description

Accommodations: House - 3 Bedrooms + Den - 2.5 Baths - (Sleeps 1-8) Hale Kai means "Home by the Sea", which is located exactly 20' from the home. You can't stay any closer to the ocean without getting wet! You will learn the true meaning of "Oceanfront" as you enjoy the sounds and views of the sea from every bedroom as well as the Great Room which opens to the ocean with 14' wide pocket doors. Adventurers will love exploring the coastline with the Kayaks that come with the house or enjoy snorkeling, scuba diving, hiking, fishing, surfing or swimming. Less adventurous souls may choose to just relax and enjoy a glass of wine and a good book while sunbathing on the private white sand surrounding Hale Kai. You also will love lounging on the seaside lanai, entertained by the locals...Spinner Dolphins, Sea Turtles and Humpback Whales. Hale Kai of Miloli'i is a very serene, relaxing and romantic setting with stunning sunsets. The views off the 32' cliff above the sea make for a stunning setting. It is located halfway between Kona and Hawaii Volcanos National Park. Excursions to Kona or Hilo for shopping or the volcano to view the lava flow are easily done in a day. The Plantation-Style home has 3000 square feet of breathtaking views from any part of the house and is nestled on the edge of Makahiki Point which juts out into the Pacific Ocean, surrounded by blue water on almost three sides and some of the most pristine coral reefs in all of the islands. Three bedrooms, a South Seas library with futon and two and a half baths will accommodate from one to eight guests. The house features over 1200 square feet of shaded outdoor living space with a wrap around tiled lanai overlooking the tropical fish, dolphins, turtles and whales below. Sleep inside or outside while being lulled to sleep by the sounds of the sea and watching the moon set over the Pacific. Hale Kai is an hour from the sirens, traffic and stress of Kona. Miloli'i is known throughout the islands for it's deep sea fishing and clear waters. Hale Kai offers some of the most undeveloped stretches of coastline on the Big Island, secret beaches to explore and plenty of sunshine to enjoy. Seasonal whale watching is spectacular. World class snorkling, scuba diving and sea kayaking is right outside your door. You may also get the chance to swim with the local sea turtles and spinner dolphins...a real treat in itself! If you are after nightlife, shopping and the bar scene, I would advise you to stay in Kona or up North. But, if you are simply after a pure Hawaiian vacation, with days filled by diving, snorkeling, swimming, playing in the waves, walks to deserted beaches and a wild coastline worth exploring or are just after a quiet private place to unwind, come enjoy the Mai-Tai sunsets of "Hale Kai By The Sea".

Hale Kai sits on Makahiki Point, (in Hawaiian, the Place of Peace) and an ancient shrine is located just a couple hundred feet from the house. This is sacred land where the blue sea offers up such daily treats as swimming with Spinner Dolphins, Humpback Whales and thousands of tropical fish. Hale Kai is located exactly 20 feet from the water which makes it the closest house to the water in all the islands. If you are a water person, this is your house! Hale Kai is located in a private setting where hiking, snorkeling, kayaking and diving are a way of life for us. We love the water and look forward to sharing this special place with you. We have connections with local business's who specialize in deep sea fishing, dolphin tours, whale watching, dive and snorkel tours, kayak lessons and tours as well as naturalist excursions. Amazing Aloha Experience!!

Just returned from a two week trip at Hale Kai. First let me say that when we arrived, the house was spotless and looked well taken care of. The house managers, Angie and Merele were available if we needed them, but they gave us our privacy during our stay. The house was plenty big enough for our family and the bedrooms, living room and kitchen were all well-equiped. The ocean view is stunning!! We enjoyed many family meals on the lan'ai with fresh caught fish from the village and coffee in the morning with dolphins to entertain us. Speaking of the village...what a beautiful place to explore. We spent two days at Honomolino which had amazing snorkeling, the dolphins came in to entertain us and we had the entire beach almost to ourselves. The scuba diving and snorkeling right out in the bay was easy to access and we saw many different fish, manta rays, eels, and even a local hammer head shark! The house is conveniently located between Kona and the volcano. We spent a day at Volcano National park and hiked out to see the lava flowing into the ocean. There were so many adventures to have we never turned on the TV and reconnected as a family. We can't wait to go back!

    Relaxing Family Getaway

Our family of 4 stayed at the house for 6 wonderful fun filled days. The accommodation is top notch. The lanai with the view of the nightly sunset is quite nice as well as the sea life that you can observe from the deck. Although the house is a bit out of the Kona area, it's well worth the extra few minutes if you are looking to get away from resort living. I would highly recommend getting groceries in Kona before heading to the house as there are no convenience stores nearby...but that is part of what makes this property great - it's at the end of the road at the edge of the cliff where the lava flow ended, with no one but the Pacific Ocean in out your back porch. It can't get any better! This modern house has all the conveniences you need for a large group and the owners are very knowledgeable and accommodating. There is no A/C but the nightly sea-breeze and the ceiling fans in every area in the summer was enough to allow us to sleep comfortably with no complaints. We highly recommend this property and if we travel back to Hawaii, will look to come to Hale Kai again.

    Great Family Get Away!

We just came home from the Big Island and our first week of our two week stay was here... it was WONDERFUL! Great memories and beautiful setting. We enjoyed the porches in the evenings and mornings, the ocean breeze, and all the adventures this area had to offer! We enjoyed the night sky and the sunsets. The ocean view was priceless! Thank you for sharing this gem! Matilda

    Spectacular!!

Simply put, Hale Kai is definitely one of my favorite places! I first stayed there in the summer of 2010, and since then I've been there two more times, and I'm already booked for early 2015. I think that says it all. With 3000 sq ft, the house has multiple "living areas" on two levels, so lack of privacy is never an issue. The location is perfect; on a cliff overlooking the Pacific Ocean, which is maybe 20 feet away. The view is unbelievable! On this last trip we saw a pod of dolphins, at least 25, no more than 30-40 yards off the coast, and 8-10 whales at about the same distance. Seeing these majestic beasts against the background of the nearly infinite Pacific Ocean was breathtaking, and that alone was worth the trip! I travel frequently, and I've found nothing that fits my definition of vacation enjoyment as well as Hale Kai. I love it there, and I will be back frequently!

Magical Christmas Week at Hale Kai

Little did we know that as we sat is Seattle and awaited de-icing of our plane, that in just 7 hours we would be watching an amazing sunset in our shorts and tank tops, toasting the spectacular waves, warmth and house that would make the most memorable holiday ever! The pictures of Hale Kai are accurate, but the real thing is even better. The house was well supplied with linens, kitchenware, and some basic cooking supplies. As I am sure previous guests did, we left behind some cooking oils (didn't have to pry the coconut oil out of the jar here), coffee filters, seasonings and such in the kitchen. One of my passions is searching Thrift Stores for needed items. I hope the large coffee cups I found are still there when we get back to Hale Kai! Also, the travel sized toiletries in the bathroom were fun and I hope the guests after us enjoy the shampoo/conditioner packets we left. My parents taught me that when you stay at someone's house, leave it nicer than when you arrived. Because Hale Kai is so incredibly well furnished, located and serenaded by nature, extra coffee cups and bathroom supplies were the best I could do.

    Paradise indeed!

a five-star rating is truly warranted for this property. Nothing is lacking; from the cache of condiments and spices to the adequate supply of laundry, cleaning and household supplies. The kitchen has about every conceivable item one would need to prepare meals. As they say--location,location, location! I don't think you could find a better spot on the Big Island for a vacation rental. To this day my wife and I long for the sound of the waves breaking on the cliffs just outside the house--truly serene. If we ever return to the Big Island, we will try to make Halekai our destination. Mahalo

    Hale Kai

Awesome House! We loved our stay. The house looked exactly like the pictures. Everything was very clean and well taken care of. The view was unbelievable. Nothing can beat falling asleep to the sound of the waves crashing against the rocks. The only bad thing was some people were camping in pick up trucks on the rock next to us. All of Hawaii beaches are public beaches so there is nothing you can do about it. It's kind of out of the way, but that can be good and bad. About an 2 hours from Hilo, hour and half from the Volcanoes, and 1 hour Kona. Very nice to come home to a quiet, out-of-the-way place and just grill and have some time to yourself. Loved it

    A Great Find!

Hale Kai is a spacious clean well-stuctured house on the edge of the town of Milolii. There is a fishing point right outside of the house and every bedroom has an ocean view. Also, the house is well-designed: the bedrooms afforded us privacy, but the living room was a great gathering place for socializing. We are happy that we stopped at a supermarket before arrival because the nearest store is miles away. We found everything we needed at Hale Kai. We had a sense of privacy, yet never felt too isolated. The scenery around the house is amazing. The house is surrounded by lava, and we enjoyed looking at the sunset from the lanai every evening. We will definitely be back!

    Serene and beautiful

This was my second stay at Hale Kai, and it certainly won't be my last. If you like crowds, traffic, and congestion, this house is not for you, but if you enjoy peace and quiet, privacy and relaxation, and nature's beauty, check it out, and I know you won't be disappointed. The house is literally on a cliff overlooking the Pacific Ocean, and you fall asleep each night listening to the waves. On the most recent trip, we saw many whales close to shore. Nice sunsets too. The house is on the end of the road, so traffic is minimal, and privacy is ensured. The location allows access to other Big Island sites (e.g. Volcanos National Park, Waipio Valley) with reasonable-length day trips. It's also fully equipped with most anything you might ever need, and overall space is more than ample. That includes a lanai/porch around the entire house. My two trips were two of the best vacations I've ever had: Seriously. No exaggeration.

    There are NO words.....

10-18-11---10-28-11 There are NO words... Jamie,Mike & Robert, We sit here sadly with bags packed and ready to step out the door for the final time. There are no words that explain how grateful we are to you for allowing us to stay at Hale Kai. As many have said I am sure. We didnt want to leave. You may want to look around. We MAY still be in a closet or some where. : ) To walk out front while heading out and about and be met by a guy on a bycycle. Then he says my name is Robert. What a joy to meet and for him to take the time a couple days later and take us down to the village with the kayaks then take us over to Honomalino Bay & snorkeling What MORE could anyone ask for. Thank you Robert. Sorry about zipping away in the Kayak on the way back. We have GOT to get a place here before they are snatched up. What a joy Milolii Lots are to be in. Until then? We hope to be back. Either 2012 or 2013 latest. We wish you SO much Aloha and Mahalo again for allowing us into your home. Much love Don & Debbie

    Wonderful week!

We had a great vacation at Hale Kai the week of June 4th through the 12th. There were 5 of us in our party including our 10 year old daughter. We arrived to find Robert, one of the owners, to greet us and show us around. He was very accommodating and friendly and offered his help with any problems or questions we might have about the house, area or things to do. The house is situated on a cliff above the ocean which provides for great views of the water from the balcony, we actually saw some dolphins, many fish and a shark. We spent the week experiencing the activities that were on the house "Top 10 list" and we really enjoyed all of them. We hiked to the beach closest to the house (Honomalino) which is a pretty good hike over slightly rough terrain (20 min.) but worth it as we excountered the Spinner dolphins who swam with us! We also hiked to another beach that was recommended (Makalawena) but we preferred Honomolino as it had calmer waters and a much shorter and less strenuous hike! The house is clean, well stocked and has everything you need, but be sure to buy groceries before you head out to the property because the nearest grocery is a 30-40 min. drive into Oceanside or back into Kona. We had a lovely time, felt very relaxed and appreciate the opportunity to share this home.

    Snorkle, Kayak, Swim!

While in Milolii we had some wonderful experiences. One afternoon, while some of the adults were diving from the house, the younger kids and I wandered south along the shore. We had a spectacular time as they explored the lava structures, collected coral and shells up on the cliff, and discovered huge blow holes where the ocean surges up through old lava tubes onto the cliff top. When we arrived at the beach, it was deserted. The kids played in the surf and I discovered a sea cave. All of the children were able to swim into the cave. It was wild with the surf surging in and out! At the back of the cave there was an opening to the lava surface above, so with a bit of climbing, everyone made it out through the top. Quite an adventure, without even getting into a car! For a more serious expedition we loaded up gear and children, including a 2-year-old, in sea kayaks and headed south for a two night campout on the Kona Sea. It wasn't too far to the secluded beach where we set up tents under the light of a full moon. Days were spent snorkling and discovering gorgeous ocean life, swimming through deep underwater lava tubes and arches, and even examining a shy shark hiding in an ocean cave. Most magical was the morning swim, when a pod of six dolphins appeared, swimming in large circles around us. There were 3 "teens", a mother dolphin, an auntie and a nursing baby, swimming in smaller and smaller circles until they were just skimming along beyond our fingertips. The baby leaped into the air and spun next to one of our littlest children. What a gift to have my whole family there to share in that once in a lifetime trip.

    The perfect vacation.

What a wonderful place to stay. This house if stocked with everything you need to make yourself at home. The wonderful view of the ocean and cliffs are an ideal way to relax. Even though it is not very close to a beach, I highly recommend this property. We swam with the dolphins at the beach just past Milolii, hiked the lava cliffs, visted the volcanos, swam with sea turtles and generally had the time of our life. Thanks for a great vacation!

    Awesome Stay at Hale Kai

Mike & Robert, Wow! THis place was beautiful. It was everything we expected and more. The housekeeper was very helpful and had the house in perfect shape. We could not have had a better couple days. I am almost afraid to tell people how wonderful it is so the price doesn’t go up or it is not always booked! After 4 days in the heat in Honolulu with more people each day than we see in Alaska in 10 years we were ready to get off by ourselves and your place was perfect. I can not image it could have been any better. Our boys loved the place from the sea kayaks to climbing on the rocks around the water. The first time we kayaked to Honomalina Beach (myself and 3 of our sons) there was only one other couple on the beach. We saw several fins in the water and decided to explore. When we got out in the bay we were surrounded by 10-12 dolphins which was incredible. We were a little nervous but my 15 year old decided to get in the water with the mask and fins and try to get a couple underwater pictures. We were blown away when he popped back out and shouted there must be 50 dolphins swimming below us. I hopped in and saw the same thing. It was probably closer to 40 but it was incredible. We were surrounded. We spend a couple hours in the water with them. Unfortunately we ran out of film in our camera in about 10 pictures. That was a highlight we will never forget. The next couple days we had a great time snorkeling and looking at the fish. Sitting on the porches and taking in the ocean was incredible as well. I wish we could have stayed longer so we could have just enjoyed hanging out a little more. My olny suggestion is to get a map outlining the beaches and places to access the water with the kayaks in the area We spent time figuring it out and were not sure where we could go. We would have felt more comfortable knowing we were in the right places. Bottom line we were a little nervous not wanting to upset any of the locals. The directions and information provided by the owners was very helpful.
